TEACHING DYSLEXIC CHILDREN TO READ

Dyslexia Tutoring

One in five children are dyslexic and learn to read in a different way. Most public and private schools do not have qualified dyslexic/reading teachers. 80% of children will learn to read whether they have a great or poor teacher.

You, as a parent, must be informed. You cannot wait. Time is of the essence. Retaining a child is not the answer. If a child is retained because they didn’t “get it” the first time, they won’t “get it” the second time with the exact same instruction.

WHAT IS DYSLEXIA?

Tutors

Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede the growth of vocabulary and background knowledge. Adopted by the IDA Board of Directors, November 2, 2002.

Dyslexia is not a disease! The word dyslexia comes from the Greek language and means poor language. Individuals with dyslexia have trouble with reading, writing, spelling, and/or math. Although they have the ability and have had the opportunities to learn but still cannot read/ or read on grade level. Individuals with dyslexia can learn; they just learn in a different way. Often these individuals, who have talented and productive minds, are said to have a language learning difference.

My Style & Philosophy

I get so excited when I am teaching a child and you look at them and you see the light go on in their eyes.  They Get IT!! After 16 years of teaching this program, I am just as enthusiastic about it now as I was the first day I was introduced to it.  Personally, I have become a better speller and reader because of this program.

I use a structured, systematic, multisensory, and detailed program. The program is called Basic Language Skills which includes: Scientific Spelling, Multisensory Grammar, Writing, Phonemes, Decoding, Phonological Awareness, Alphabet Activities and much more.

Bring your child to me and I will teach her/him to read.

What is a Certified Academic Therapist?

since 2004

Academic language therapists (sometimes called an educational therapist or certified academic language therapist) are specialists specially trained to work with students with dyslexia or reading disability. They have completed extensive accredited training in multisensory structured language teaching. They are trained in the structure of the English language and how to teach that structure in a multisensory manner. They are trained to remediate problems in reading, spelling, and written language. Not all students need academic therapy; some just need tutoring for help with a particular subject.
